We are now Back Home. Did loads of shopping in P'boro yesterday, and I got some lovely balls of Rowan 4-ply soft in chocolate, which I am marking down for another vest top. I think I like them, and they're good under coats and that. Got some little pressies, including a couple for antarra (also, if you're reading this, let me know where you are/that you're ok, I've been a little worried), and some stuff for a miniature swap on Ravelry. More knickers and vests, a tank for my father (!), 2-disc special edition of Sweeney Todd for £5 down from £23, which I thought was rather good, and a bunch of useful usb cables/add-ons for mobiles and pods from a pound shop.
Oh, and knirirr was accosted outside HMV by a pair of Mormons who had the name of their church on their badges in Welsh. They were confused when I tried Welsh on them, and more confused when I suggested they might be from Salt Lake City, and perhaps that was why they had the badges. Turned out they used to be posted in Merthyr, which confused me rather, as I don't recall it being the most Welsh of towns.
Which reminds me, I saw my baby bro out in his university hoodie whilst I was home. Bangor university, one of the Welsher of the universities in Wales. He is at the school of music. The shirt read "Ysgol Cerddoriaeth."* I nearly cried. If that wasn't bad enough, when pressed to explain the error, I was told that "That's what it says on the door of the department."
Hell, handbasket, &c &c.

Still, soon there should be white_hart lemon drizzle cake. Things feel better after cake, I find.
*There should be a mutation at the beginning of the second word, for the uninitiated.

Ooo let me see if I can get the mutation right (I have been practising!). Should it be Ngherddoriaeth?

Ysgol Gerddoriaeth, it should be. What you have up there would be absolutely correct in the formulation "in the music of," so eg "Yng ngherddoriaeth Bach", and so on.

I am sticking at it! It's proper useful as well - knowing that Xmumble and Ymumble are coming from the same Zmumble word helps immeasurably if any S4C or BBC Cymru queries come up at work. We have FINALLY (after god knows how many years) got a native Welsh speaker in to help with all that though, yay!

It's also Ysgol Cerddoriaeth on the officially-translated website. I can only assume that, overnight, someone changed the Welsh language and just forgot to tell you and me. Or that the translation services at Bangor think that ysgol is a masculine noun, which it isn't.

I am similarly puzzled why the Gwyl Gerdd Dant is always billed on S4C, and is on the idents, and is, in fact, on all official publications &c. that I've seen, as Gwyl Cerdd Dant. Nobody I knows says Cerdd and even the TV presenters in the effing studio say Gerdd, and unless my understanding of Welsh is lacking, I don't see why it shouldn't be Gerdd. Pfft.

As my pitiful attempt above shows, my mutations are pretty dreadful but I think I have finally got the hang of when to say Fangor and when to say Mangor. Possibly. Dwyn byw yn Mangor ond dwyn dod o Fangor? (I'm not really - I've only been there once!)

Wow, your swift looks nothing like mine! I just realized this morning, that I can measure out yardage from the wool I want rid off, wind it on the swift in hank forms, then trade it!! Why didn't I think of that last month???

Ooh, so I see! Very cunning.
I couldn't find an umbrella swift at a price I was comfortable asking my parents for, at the time (found one after they'd bought this, of course). Still, I like this design, as I've seen umbrella swifts people have had that have become harder and harder to put up as time wore on.
